From Wikipedia:

“Edward Joseph (Ed) Dwight, Jr. (born September 9, 1933) is an American sculptor and former test pilot who was the first African American to be trained as an astronaut.”

He was hand picked by John F. Kennedy to be in NASA’s Mercury Program, and was to be on the first manned mission to the Moon. Things did not quite turn out that way. Another amazing episode of the Memory Palace.
