Beavers will save the world

Researchers have discovered that ponds caused by beaver dams naturally remove nitrogen from water. Nitrogen fertilizers from farms get washed into streams, where they fuel algae growth. The algae use up the oxygen in the streams, the rivers, and eventually parts of the ocean, leading to oxygen-free “dead zones.”

Beavers can also save California from drought by trapping water in ponds and expanding wetlands.
